The significance of this amendment was huge to the American society. For once it granted slaves the freedom that they had long deserved, and more than just freedom it made them an equal member of society. This was huge because the problem of slavery had been huge for the past years and now all of sudden they were equal like everyone else. Of course not everything turned perfected all of a sudden, but instead it gave America a path to travel that would eventually lead to a better place. On the path was race riots and violence of many kinds, mostly because no one was use to calling the ex-slave their equals, but this amendment changed that and further change the course of history altogether.
