Background paragraph:
The background to this case that made it such an influence one in history is that during the mid to late 1800s and even into the beginning of the 1900s, the phase "separate but equal" was used to describe the current segregation issue. The phase "Separate but equal" can be described as simply as it sounds, it says that facilities are to be separated by race, but as long as they are equal then it is not considered segregation. If in fact this idea was able to be performed correctly by the courts and the cities and towns that made the separate facilities then this concept may not have caused such an uprising in protests. However, the facilities were far from being equal in nature and the whites had a much better treatment. This fueled the segregation rage that many people had and in turn is the major reason for Brown v. Board of education.
Significance paragraph:
Continuing on the idea of separate but equal, this idea also affect the school system and these two reason are what caused the case of Brown v. board of education. So the significance of this case comes from the concept that African-Americans were not allowed to have the same educations that whites were at the time. In fact black kids had to walk miles just to go to school while there were white only schools right in their neighborhoods. So they took this idea to court to fight the separate but equal idea and because of this case, rights for African Americans expanded greatly.
